Strategies on how to feel at ease in an interview
Interviews are designed and structured in a way that makes it easy for a prospective employer to be able to select the best job applicant based on factors such as experience, qualifications and merits among other factors. This is usually very important in that it makes it easy for you as the employer to be able to get the most and well suited person to fill a vacant job position. However, despite the fact that an interview should be a conversation, there are applicants who see it as a trial. Due to this, such applicants are usually much tensed right from the first instance. This is after immediately stepping into the interview room. When applicant sees an interview as a trial, it is very possible that the candidate will have a very poor performance.
When attending an interview it is important to ensure that you are as relaxed as possible. This is so as you are able to remain at ease throughout the interview. It is important to note that this type of uniqueness does not come naturally but rather it is something that you have to work for. The process of undertaking an interview smoothly requires the interviewee to be knowledgeable on a few life skills. This is due to the reason that in most instances, you cannot receive coaching on how to present yourself in an interview. Instead, this is something that you have to work for so as to ensure that you are as successful as possible.
As an interviewer, you have to play a great role in ensuring that there is an interviewing environment in an interview room. This is by preparing a room that is very quiet and one that is free from distractions. You should ensure that the room is well lit in a way that the room is not too bright or too dark. You should regulate the lighting such that the interviewee is as comfortable as possible. It is also important to regulate the temperature of a room such that it is not too warm or too cold. Temperature should be maintained at its medium such that you and the interviewees will feel at ease while in the room.
When welcoming an interviewee, it is important to have a smile on your face and great him/her with a very firm handshake. Most interviewees feel very comfortable and at ease when the interviewer is friendly and welcoming. As an interviewer, you need to ensure that you remain as professional as possible. At no one time should you express personal feelings to the interviewees especially those from the opposite sixths is very important risky in that it may give the interviewee a wrong idea about the whole interview and therefore it can become a total failure.
In an interview, it is usually not advisable that you should get into the interview right away. Instead, you should hold a brief general chat with the interviewee such that he/she feels as relaxed as possible. You should chat about general issues that do not touch on the job at hand. This is mainly so that you can be able to sway away fear and anxiety that the candidate may have. After the briefing session and chatting is over, it is important that you should provide a background of the position that’s at hand. This enables the interviewee to get a preview of what will be required of him/her in the interview.
It is important to also ensure that you also inform the interviewee on the structure with which the interview is to be undertaken. This is very important in that it gives the interviewee a rough copy of what he/she is expected to respond to during the interview. It is very important to note that with a brief description of the interview, the interviewee is bound to remain focused and also be at ease during the interviewing session. The interviewer is also required to note that he/she should not have any personal bias for or against the interviewee. This is so as the interviewee can be able to remain composed through out the interview. When the interviewee speaks, you should listen attentively and avoid a situation whereby you may require the interviewee to repeat something that he/she may have already said.
